Instructions

Recipe: Spicy Whelk Salad (Golbaengi Muchim)

Ingredients:

  • 1 can of whelks (canned golbaengi)
  • Green onion
  • Cucumber
  • Onion
  • Carrot

Seasoning Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons red pepper powder (gochugaru)
  • 1.5 tablespoons red chili paste (gochujang)
  • 4 tablespoons vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons plum extract
  • Sesame oil
  • A pinch of sesame seeds

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Whelks:
    Cut the whelks into bite-sized pieces (2–3 cuts per whelk).
  2. Prepare the Green Onion:
    Slice the green onion finely, soak it in water, then drain to remove the strong flavor.
  3. Prepare the Vegetables:
    Thinly slice the cucumber, carrot, and onion.
  4. Make the Sauce:
    Combine all the ingredients listed for the seasoning sauce in a bowl and mix well. For a richer flavor, you can add some of the whelk broth from the canned golbaengi to the sauce.
  5. Mix the Salad:
    In a mixing bowl, combine the whelks and vegetables. Add the seasoning sauce, sesame oil, and mix thoroughly. Finish by sprinkling sesame seeds on top before serving.
